Our MediCal Outpatient Programs help pregnant and parenting women recover from alcohol and drug abuse. Our dedicated and supportive staff help these women learn to gain sobriety and control over their addictions, and rebuild their lives without alcohol or drugs. We ensure that pregnant participants receive prenatal care, and that other participants, including children, receive medical care. Our goals are to reunite the women with their families, to enrich the mother-child bond, and to help the women go on to lead productive, drug-free lives.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), the leading known environmental cause of mental retardation in the Western World, can occur when women drink during pregnancy. Each year 4,000 to 12,000 babies are born with FAS, and thousands more experience the somewhat lesser disabilities of fetal alcohol effects (FAE). (US Dept. of Health & Human Services, 1993.)
